Women in Real Estate

Georgia Malone

Georgia Malone is the owner of a Manhattan-based real estate brokerage firm which sells office buildings and leases office and retail space. Malone feels "it's still a challenge for women to break into a male-dominated field like real estate, especially when they own their own business. It's difficult being the pioneers and knocking down barriers." Malone found her way into real estate because, she says, "I always loved architecture, the feel of a building and the great people working in the industry." A former lawyer, Malone says her expertise in real estate law, landlord litigation and rent stabilization gives her a competitive edge representing buyers and sellers of apartment portfolios. "For example," she says, "how many brokers can analyze rent rolls?"

"I was lucky," says Malone, "in that I had already gained credibility and recognition as a successful lawyer, so I didn't really face the prejudice and difficulties that many women do." It's becoming somewhat easier to knock down the barriers today," she says, "simply because there are more women in the industry, so they can build on the strength of those who went before them."
